John Patitucci Trio – “Remembrance” August 4th

July 31st, 2009 by groundswell

Remembrance

As for the trio that he has assembled, Patitucci says that this particular group is a dream band for him, which makes Remembrance a special recording. “I’ve been waiting for years to make a trio record like this,” he says. “Brian is a consummate artist whose contributions go way beyond the drums. He’s powerful, and he has great interpretive skills, incredible ears and a breadth of musicality. Joe improvises at such a high level, and he brings a great sound, phrasing and overall feeling to everything he plays on.”

Brian Blade & Friends at Highline Ballroom

July 23rd, 2009 by groundswell

“This was a special show with a special vibe. Each song was more of an offering than a performance, and the band was as appreciative of the audience’s warm reception as the audience was of the band’s performance. There was an atmosphere of knowing and understanding what was happening making it an intimate gathering of friends, and a triumph in music.”

Listening Post – “Poesia”

July 20th, 2009 by groundswell

Here is a nice review of Posia from “The Buffalo News

poesia

“Edward Simon Trio with John Patitucci and Brian Blade, Poesia (CamJazz). Venezuelan pianist Simon is now 40. He says on this trio disc that as he matures, he is finding more poetry and more beauty in things “though sometimes I’m looking in the same old places.” When you hear the stunning beauty of the solo piano piece “My Love For You” that begins the disc (it ends with a reprise), you think you may have stumbled on an exalted artistic plateau for a pianist virtually unknown since Brad Mehldau. What follows in the trio selections— including a fanciful and decidedly odd fragmenting of Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” that turns Coltrane’s original point upside down—is at times quite beautiful (“Roby,” the title tune) but not quite the exalted aesthetic trance you think it’s going to be. Still, this is a jazz pianist who is developing brilliantly and caught, on this disc, at a profoundly lyrical stage of development. ★★★½ (J. S.)”

Third Occasion Review

July 17th, 2009 by groundswell

“Brian Blade’s drums crackle with color and light, increasing when Blade and Colley start to counter each other. When the chorus enters in the middle section, the effect is almost symphonic, like a church organ in a Bach concerto where the melody becomes more informal, more ingrained. From there, Binney launches a simple solo that methodically acquires layer-upon-layer of passion, until his alto is screaming in agony, ecstasy, or both.”
